Origin of Belgian Block Pavers

Authentic Belgian blocks were quarried from a distinctive sandstone in the Soignies Forest (Wallonia, Belgium). First used in 18th-century Brussels streets, their durability and aesthetic made them a premium export. By the 19th century, they paved ports and boulevards in London, New York, Philadelphia, and beyond. Modern "Belgian block" often means any rectangular granite sett; true Soignies sandstone is rare and prized for restoration.
