How many people left east Berlin?

Over two million people left East Berlin. Most of them left illegally, risking their lives to escape to West Berlin. The Berlin Wall was built in 1961 to stop people from escaping from East Berlin. It was a success in this respect, but it also became a symbol of the Cold War and the division of Germany. The Berlin Wall was finally demolished in 1989, and Germany was reunified in 1990.
