Was greece involved in world war 2?
Greece participated in World War II from October 28, 1940, when it rejected an ultimatum by Fascist Italy and repelled the subsequent Italian invasion (see Greco-Italian War). At the start of the Greco-Italian War, Greece had a population of roughly 7 million and a military numbering at that time 244,000 men.[1] In early 1941, Germany decided to assist its Italian ally (see Operation Marita). German forces quickly overran northern Greece, forcing both Allied and Greek armed forces to retreat south through mainland Greece and Peloponnese and finally evacuate to Egypt and Crete from April 24 to May 1, 1941, with the fall of Kalamata.[2]
