    • The Royal Palace, or El Palacio Real as it is known to the locals, is the largest palace in Europe. Of its 2,000 opulent rooms, 50 can be visited by the public. Construction began in 1738, four years after the Royal Fortress burned down. King Carlos III, son of King Phillip V, moved in 1764 but the palace would not be fully complete until 100 years after construction began. The Royal Palace would be home to Spain's royal monarchs until 1931, when political pressures forced them to take a smaller role in Spain's governance. The palace is still used today for official ceremonies and receptions.
