Seven Monuments of India

As the largest country in South Asia, India has a lot to offer tourists. There are many palaces, festivals and wildlife sanctuaries to keep a traveler occupied for months. There are also numerous monuments to explore while visiting India. The history of the landmarks of India is overwhelming, and it may take tourists more than one trip to soak in all the culture of the country.
  1. Lotus Temple

    • The Lotus Temple is located in Kalkaji in southern Delhi. It is named Lotus Temple because of its lotus shape. People of all faiths go there to meditate and find peace. The lotus is significant to the Indians because it represents the Manifestation of God. The sacred flower is regarded as a symbol of purity and tenderness. The structure took 10 years to build with the help of over 800 workers.

    Humayun's Tomb

    • Humayun's Tomb was built in 1565 by Humayun's senior widow, Bega Begam. Located in Delhi, it is an example of Mughal architecture. It has high arches and a double dome. Many members of the Mughal Dynasty are buried in the mausoleum, including Humayun's junior wife, Dara Shikoh.

    India Gate

    • The India Gate stands in the center of New Delhi. It is 42 meters high. It was built in honor 70,000 Indian soldiers who died fighting for the British Army in World War I. The Duke of Connaught began its construction in 1921. There are over 13,516 British and Indian soldiers names on the monument who were killed in the Northwestern Frontier in the Afghan war of 1919.

    City Palace

    • The City Palace, located in Jaipur, is divided into courtyards, gardens and buildings. It is the location of the Chandra Mahal, Shri Govind Dev Temple and the City Palace Museum. City Palace is full of Rajasthani and Mughal art and architecture. The museum contains armory from the 15th century, costumes, paintings, floral arrangements and mirrors.

    Lake Palace

    • Lake Palace, located in Udaipur, is surrounded by Lake Pichola. It is a 250-year-old hotel made of white marble. The city of Udaipur was founded in 1568 by Maharana Udai Singh and is considered very romantic and peaceful.

    Gateway of India

    • The Gateway of India is Mumbai's principal landmark. It commemorates the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. Its construction began on March 31, 1913, and was completed in 1924. It is 26 meters high. It is made of yellow basalt stone with turrets and latticework carved into it.

    Taj Mahal

    • Almost anyone who thinks of India thinks of the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is a white marbled mausoleum in Agra. Mughal Emperor Shahjahan built it in the 17th in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It was his way of immortalizing their love. The mausoleum is at one end of the garden, which has four water channels representing the four rivers of the Islamic Paradise.
