Historical Monuments of Greece

The ancient Greeks left a huge legacy. One of the first great civilizations, they gave the world mathematics, philosophy and the Olympics, to name but a few contributions. The landscape of modern Greece holds evidence of a great history of architecture and design. Hundreds of ancient ruins still stand to show the power this empire once wielded.
  1. Temple of Olympian

    • Only 15 of the original columns stand today at the Temple of Olympian.

The ruins of the Temple of Olympian stand in Athens as a reminder of a huge temple dedicated to Zeus. The structure took more than 700 years to build, construction starting in the sixth century B.C. and finally being completed in 131 A.D. by the Roman Emperor Hadrian. Only 15 of the original 104 columns stand today.

    The Acropolis

    • The Acropolis in Athens.

The Acropolis in Athens is where four of Greece's greatest monuments can be found. The Propylaea, Parthenon, Erechtheum and the temple of Athena Nike stand as symbols of architectural mastery and the successful history of the city.

    Temple of Apollo Epicurius

    • The Temple of Apollo Epicurius in Bassae was built between 450 and 400 B.C. and has had historians confused for centuries as to why. It owes its amazing preservation to its location high in mountains, too far up for for looters.

    Medieval City of Rhodes

    • Located on the Greek Island of Rhodes the medieval city is a designated World Heritage Site. It was built by the Hospitalers, an order of Christian Knights who resided on the Island from 1309 to 1523. What stands today is the original city these knights built, which is still inhabited. Since 1523, the Island has been under the control of the Turks and Italians but is today part of Greece.
