Venice was founded in the 5th century by refugees fleeing from the mainland, and it quickly became a wealthy and powerful maritime republic. Venice was known for its beautiful architecture, its canals, and its role as a center of trade and commerce. Venice was also known as the "Daughter and Creature of Rome" because of its close relationship with the Roman Catholic Church. The Pope gave Venice special privileges and protections, and Venice in turn supported the Pope and the Church.
