How to Take a Walking Tour of Antwerp

Known as the "Diamond Capital" of the world, Antwerp, Belgium, is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Europe. Take a walking tour of Antwerp, beginning in Antwerpen Zuid or Antwerp South. This is the cultural center of the city and is filled with museums, art galleries, churches, monuments and other beautiful architecture.

      Begin your tour at the town hall, or stadhuis. Inside the town hall is a collection of 19th century paintings that showcase the history of Antwerp.

      Move on to the Gildehuizen, the former headquarters of the city's guild masters from the 16th and 17th centuries. These houses offer a glimpse into "Old Antwerp."

      Continue on to the folk museum, located in two former guild houses. Visitors can check out the collection of marionettes and historical costumes.

      Go to Butcher's Hall, called Vleeshuis Museum by the locals, for a glimpse at prehistoric, Egyptian and Roman artwork, weaponry and furnishings.

      Visit the symbol of Antwerp, the gothic Cathedral of Our Lady. Inside the cathedral are several paintings by the Flemish master, Peter Paul Rubens, including "The Raising of The Cross," the "Assumption of the Virgin Mary" and "The Descent From The Cross."
