Beaches in Normandy, France

Normandy is a region in northwest France with a coastline that covers the regions of Manche, Calvados and Seine-Maritime. The most famous Normandy beaches are the ones designated Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword, which is where the Allied forces landed in June 1944. Normandy beaches are now popular family destinations and some of the beaches have good surfing conditions.
  1. Colleville-sur-Mer

    • The beach itself is accessed via a minor road just west of the town of Colleville-sur-Mer. Steep slopes lead down from high dunes to the beach below. The beach was designated "Omaha" during the D-Day landings in World War II, and was the site of the fiercest fighting during the invasion. Two gun emplacements still remain on the heights overlooking the beach and the American military cemetery is nearby.

    Brehal Beach

    • Brehal beach can be found on the Contentin peninsula and enjoys views over the salt marshes of the Bay of Mont Saint Michel nearby. Wide flat sands at low tide make it a favorite family destination. Attractions include two golf clubs, a nature discovery center, cycling and tennis. Local fare available in the restaurants of the area includes oysters and mussels.

    Gouville-sur-Mer

    • Sand dunes lead down to the beach of Gouville-sur-Mer, which stretches for almost four miles. The beach is considered safe for swimming and low tide allows visitors to walk out to the Senequet lighthouse just three miles away. From the lighthouse it is possible to see across the English Channel to the island of Jersey. The beach has a European Blue Flag designation, signifying the cleanliness of the water and the beach. Access for wheelchairs is provided.

    Siouville-Hague

    • The town of Siouville-Hague is a popular family vacation resort, but the beach also attracts surfers from all over the world. The beach consists of six miles of white sand, wide at low tide. The beach is wheelchair-accessible and has been awarded the European Blue flag to signify the cleanliness of the water and the good management of the beach.
