Famous Indian Restaurants

Major urban areas throughout the United States have a variety of restaurants serving ethnic cuisine, including Indian dining options. Some of these restaurants have garnered a reputation on a local or nationwide scale and been featured in publications. Entrees at Indian restaurants consist of meat and vegetables in spicy sauces, including curry. Most Indian restaurants offer buffet-style or sit-down service.

    • Amma (ammanyc.com) is in New York City's Midtown East neighborhood and has been featured in India Abroad magazine and the New York Times. Main courses include tandoori grilled halibut, kararee bhindi -- a combination of okra, tomatoes and onions -- and farm-raised Madras chicken. The dining room has a vibrant atmosphere. Amma was founded in 2002. Street parking is available in front of the restaurant. The restaurant accepts reservations, but does not require them.

    Tamarind Bay

    • Situated in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Tamarind Bay (tamarind-bay.com) is a greater Boston Indian bistro-style eatery within Harvard Square. The Boston Globe and Boston Phoenix featured this restaurant in their respective publications. The restaurant opened in 2004. Menu items include murgh khurchan -- a chicken curry dish, tandoori grilled scallops and konkani lobster. Take-out and delivery services are available; only the Cambridge area receives delivery from Tamarind Bay.

    Rasika

    • Rasika (rasikarestaurant.com) is an upscale Indian restaurant in Washington, D.C., located in the city's Penn Quarter district. This restaurant has been featured in the Washington Post newspaper and Esquire magazine. Valet parking is available. Dinner entrees include tandoori salmon, palak chaat -- a combination of crispy spinach and yogurt -- and chicken biryani. The restaurant also offers a pre-theater menu; nearby theaters include the Shakespeare Theater Company and Ford's Theater.

    Shiva Indian Restaurant

    • Shiva Indian Restaurant (shivarestaurant.com) is in the University Place neighborhood of Houston, Texas, approximately five minutes from Rice University and Hermann Park. This restaurant has been open since 1990 and featured in the Houston Chronicle and Zagat Survey. Shiva provides a buffet-style lunch and sit-down service for dinner. At night, the dining room lights are dimmed to provide a romantic ambiance. The menu features murgh shahi korma -- boneless chicken -- and kadai gosht -- a lamb curry.

    India Palace

    • San Diego's India Palace (indiapalace-lajolla.com) is in the Hillcrest Shopping Center in the city's Hillcrest neighborhood; the restaurant is within 10 minutes of Balboa Park and Mission Valley. India Palace has been mentioned in the New York Times, Fodor's and Zagat. Entrees include lobster vindaloo, lamb sagwala -- lamb with spinach -- and channa masala, or garbanzo beans. Parking is available in the shopping center lot. The restaurant serves a buffet-style lunch.
