Train Travel in Finland

Finland by rail is a popular way to absorb the scenery in this country of modern cities and remote wildernesses. Grab a seat and zip from idyllic lake around Lappeeranta to Helsinki nightclub to the Arctic Circle and beyond in Lapland.
  1. Getting There

    • Direct rail access to Finland is only possible through Russia or Sweden, and most fly or take the Viking Line overnight ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki. Finland Rail Pass holders get a 50 percent discount on ferry tickets.

    Where To Go

    • The rail system favors the major cities in southern Finland, but the scenery is most notable in the east. Passenger trains go as far north as the skiing town of Kolari, in the center of Lapland.

    Classes and Tickets

    • Finnish trains offer varying classes of seats and sleeper accommodations for overnight journeys. Tickets can be purchased online or in any European rail station up to six months in advance of the first day of travel.

    • Purchase the Finland Rail pass for three, five or 10 days of travel to and from anywhere in Finland within a one-month period. Travel days can occur consecutively or spread throughout the month.
