Travel to Pompeii, Italy

For history buffs and archaeology fans, no trip to Italy would be complete without a stop at the partially buried town Pompeii, site of the famous volcanic eruption. While the major airlines do not offer direct flights into Pompeii, there are a number of other ways to get there.
  1. Trains

    • The Circumvesuviana train runs between Naples and Sorrento, stopping at Pompeii Scavi station. It takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes to arrive at Pompeii from either of these two cities.

    Bus

    • From Naples you can catch a bus operated by SITA. Bus ticket prices are approximately the same as the train, but the trip may take a bit longer due to traffic along the local roads.

    Car

    • If you have a decent sense of direction, a fundamental grasp of the Italian language and an international driver's license, rent a car at the Naples airport and drive to Pompeii yourself.

    Water Taxi

    • These operate from a number of locations all over the nearby coastal areas. They are faster and offer more dramatic scenery than over-the-road options but tend to cost a bit more.

    Tour

    • Joining a tour group or hiring a guide tends to be the most expensive option. However, it can significantly reduce any possible hassles and the cost generally includes transportation to and from Pompeii, site entrance fees and the services of an interpreter.
