About Canakkale, Turkey

Canakkale is a province in northwestern Turkey that straddles the Dardanelles, a narrow body of water between Europe and Asia. Visitors use the city of Canakkale as a base to explore the surrounding area, famous for a historical WWI battle and the legendary city of ancient Troy.
  1. History

    • In April of 1915, British, Australian and New Zealand troops attempted to seize the nearby Gallipoli peninsula in an effort to ultimately claim Constantinople, the then-capital of the Turkish Empire. Their efforts were unsuccessful and resulted in the loss of over 100,000 Allied and Turkish soldiers.

    Significance

    • Canakkale's location gives it power, because anyone who controlled the Dardanelles could also control European access to modern-day Istanbul, the Black Sea and Asia.

    Climate

    • The average daily temperature is 25 to 30 degrees Celsius in summer and 10 degrees Celsius in winter.

    Features

    • Gallipoli Historical National Park is a 33,000 hectare span of land that is dedicated to the 1915 battles. Tours of the Park run regularly from Canakkale.

    Fun Fact

    • The wooden horse from the 2004 movie "Troy" is now located along the waterfront in the city of Cannakale.
