In April of 1915, British, Australian and New Zealand troops attempted to seize the nearby Gallipoli peninsula in an effort to ultimately claim Constantinople, the then-capital of the Turkish Empire. Their efforts were unsuccessful and resulted in the loss of over 100,000 Allied and Turkish soldiers.
Canakkale's location gives it power, because anyone who controlled the Dardanelles could also control European access to modern-day Istanbul, the Black Sea and Asia.
