Where Are the Canary Islands?

The Canary Islands were originally named for the large dogs residing on the islands. The Canary Islands consists of seven major islands and many smaller ones, all formed by now-extinct volcanoes. The Islands are a common European tourist destination. Legend has it that the lost island of Atlantis used to be located among the Canary Islands.

- The Canary Islands are located just off the west coast of Africa, near Morocco. Because of this tropical location, the Canary Islands experience mild weather all year.
