Beaches in Paphos

According to Greek mythology, Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, was washed ashore in Paphos, Cyprus. Tourism boards certainly don't shy away from this tale when it comes to promoting this coastal city, and its beaches are often described as mystical, historic and legendary. With all manner of beaches in and around Paphos, there is bound to be one that pleases you. Beaches range from shingly stretches to kid-friendly to footprint-free picturesque strands.
  1. Petra Tou Romiou

    • Head straight for the crystal-clear sea and immerse yourself in history when you visit Petra tou Romiou. This beach is situated just below Aphrodite's Rock. It's the most visited beach in Paphos, due to the legend that the Greek goddess of beauty and love emerged here from the waves. The waters are deep and you need to be a strong swimmer to master the cold and mighty waves. Romantics can join couples at dusk who clutch hands, stand and admire the view as the sun sets over this narrow, pebbly beach.

    Coral Bay Beach

    • Coral Bay is a favorite for families. Arching eight miles beside clear blue Mediterranean waters, the sand here feels like sieved flour between your toes. The Mediterranean Sea can be choppy, but waters here are shallow and calm. The same can't be said of the beach; every conceivable activity takes place from banana boat rides, water skiing to beach games. There are plenty of bars and trendy restaurants on the beach and in the resort itself. For something different, families can join one of the many walking groups that explore the hidden beaches and coves that surround the bay.

    Faros Beach

    • Situated at the west end of Paphos town, Faros Beach is named after the lighthouse that overlooks it. Faros Beach is not as picturesque as Coral Beach. It's one for the locals but ideal for families looking for a secluded setting without crowds. The waters are warm and suitable for paddlers, and lifeguards are on duty during the summer season. Like most of Paphos's beaches, Faros has been awarded the blue flag for its cleanliness.

    Lara Bay Beach

    • Lara Bay is known as a sanctuary for green and loggerhead turtles.

Keen to get away from the bustle? Then head to Lara Beach, a nearly deserted sandy strip, home to loggerhead and green turtles. Also known as turtle beach, Lara is famous for its turtle sanctuary. No loungers or umbrellas are permitted, but those feeling adventurous can roam the treacherous unpaved roads surrounding the beach in a four wheeler - you will need this vehicle to access the beach. The beach is kept extremely clean and because of the wildlife, acting responsibly is a must. On the main road there is a open-air restaurant, although no restaurants or bars are around the actual bay.
