Historic Spanish Monuments

When you travel to Spain, you will be immersed in a culture that has been around for centuries. Catholicism plays an important role in Spanish culture, so many of the historic monuments are cathedrals built with the Catholic church in mind. It doesn't matter which large city you visit in Spain, you will be able to witness scenic monuments with great historical significance.
  1. New Cathedral (Catedral Nueva)

    • Catedral Nueva is a Spanish monument in Salamanca.

      Construction of the Catedral Nueva in Salamanca began in 1513 and took over 200 years to complete. King Ferdinand the Catholic spearheaded the project because he wanted a bigger and better cathedral. The original architects were Anton de Egas and Alonso Rodriges, but new architects also worked on the project which was completed in 1733. It was originally built with Gothic architectural features, but other architects influenced the structure with other styles such as Renaissance and Baroque.

    Old Cathedral (Catedral Vieja)

    • The Catedral Vieja is located in Salamanca.

      Construction for the Catedral Vieja started approximately 900 years ago and took almost 100 years to complete. Before the Caterdral Nueva was constructed in Salamanca, this monument was the main worship place. There are Romanesque and Gothic architectural features you will see in the cathedral's construction. You can see the scallop-tiled Cock Tower, which is known as the Torre del Gallo in Spanish. The famous altarpiece is also something you will want to see. It is located in the central absidal chapel was painted by Nicholas of Florence. It is made up of 53 panels and it narrates the story of Jesus and Mary and also depicts the terrors of the last judgement.

    Mosque of Cordoba

    • Cordoba Spain is home to many historical Spanish monuments.

      Construction on the Mosque of Cordoba started between 784 and 786. There were expansions in later centuries with most additions added between 833 to 852 and 961 to 976. In 1236, the mosque was used as a Catholic cathedral after Ferdinand III conquered the city. In the 16th century, a Christian chapel was built in the heart of the Mosque of Cordoba.

    Catedral de Santiago de Compostela

    • The Santiago de Compostela is a famous Spanish Cathedral.

      Located in the city of Santiago de Compostela, the cathedral is the most notable monument. It is a famous pilgrimage site. It is tradition for those participating in the pilgrimage to kiss the golden mollusk shell located at the alter. It is an important pilgrimage site because legend has it the remains of the apostle James were found at the cathedral. There were smaller churches built on this pilgrimage site until the construction of the Catedral de Santiago de Compostela began in 1075. It was completed in 1122.
