Information About Medieval Castles

From history books to fairy tales, the mystery and grandeur of medieval castles have captured people's interest. Originally constructed out of necessity, castles evolved into works of art. Medieval castles appear across Europe.
  1. History

    • Medieval castles were built and used between the 10th and 17th centuries. The first castles were built out of wood and evolved into structures with thick stone walls. Each European country developed its own architectural style using other country's castles as examples. Castles were built for protection, pride and as a visible landmark.

    Geography

    • The countries with the most castles include France, Germany, England, Spain, Italy and Austria, according to Topcastles. Even places such as Finland, Ethiopia and Pakistan have medieval castles. Supposed haunted castles exist in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

    Tourism

    • Many medieval castles have been enhanced for tourism so visitors can experience their history and architecture in person. Some have been turned into hotels, while others hold concerts, medieval fairs and theatre productions. It's also possible to get married in some castles.
