Why is French an official language in Luxembourg?

Luxembourgish, German, and French are all official languages of Luxembourg. As a part of Germanic countries, German and Luxembourgish is widely spoken than French, but due to it's history with France's rule, Luxembourg was made an official language due to France being the main influence to the country back then.
