Algeria's Major Seaports: Gateways to Mediterranean Trade

Algeria's ~1,000 km Mediterranean coastline hosts seven major seaports, each serving distinct economic roles:

1. Port of Algiers

Largest & most important. Capital city hub for general cargo, containers, passengers, and fishing. Handles the lion's share of imports/exports.

2. Port of Oran

Second-largest. Northwestern Algeria. Specializes in oil & gas exports plus general cargo. Key energy gateway.

3. Port of Skikda

Northeastern industrial port for petrochemicals—hydrocarbon derivatives, LNG, condensates. Critical for energy sector.

4. Port of Béjaïa

Eastern commercial port: containerized cargo, general merchandise. Also passenger/ferry terminal to France/Spain.

5. Port of Annaba

Northeastern multipurpose port – bulk, break-bulk, containers. Includes shipbuilding/repair facilities.

6. Port of Mostaganem

Northwestern fishing port – primary hub for fish processing and export.

7. Port of Ghazaouet

Western Algeria – medium-sized, fish-focused; also naval base.

Together, these ports handle the vast majority of Algeria's hydrocarbon exports, commercial imports, and maritime trade with Europe, Africa, and beyond.
