The other name given to the Republic of Ireland is Éire. Éire is the Irish-language name for Ireland and has been used officially since the foundation of the Irish Free State in 1922. It is also the name used in the Irish constitution, which came into effect in 1937. The name "Republic of Ireland" was adopted in 1949 when Ireland became a republic and left the British Commonwealth.
