When was aberdeen built?
The history of Aberdeen can be traced back to 6th century Pictish times, when it was referred to as "Aberdon", which is thought to be derived from two old Brittonic words: "aber" meaning river mouth, and "don", deriving from the name of the River Don. The town remained a small settlement until the 12th century, when a royal charter was granted by King David I to make it a royal burgh. This led to a period of significant growth, and by the 15th century, Aberdeen was a major port and trading center. Its population continued to grow throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, and by the end of the 19th century, it had become Scotland's third largest city.
