Bunratty Castle was built sometime around 1425. It is conveniently located near Shannon Airport, so that visitors needn't travel a long way after their flight to see the castle. This castle presents more than 500 years of Irish history, but activities extend far beyond seeing exhibits. Plan on taking part in hands-on events, particularly the medieval banquets that are given twice each night and that are presented in full costume with authentic entertainment, including reciting poets and live musicians singing and playing lute, violin or flute. Visitors also can take part in cooking and craft demonstrations and attend Irish Nights in the Corn Barn in Folk Park. No disabled access is available. The Bunratty Castle Hotel is just minutes from the castle, so booking a room in the area is easy. Visitors also can travel to the Cliffs of Moher (about an hour away), or to the small nearby village of Quinn to see the town's monastery ruins.

Blarney Castle is a castle for superstition lovers. This castle is home to the world-famous Blarney Stone, which (according to local legend) bestows the gift of wit and conversation to those who kiss it. Doing this is a bit of a challenge, as visitors must lie on their backs in the top turret of the castle in a precarious (but safe) position to access the stone. If this doesn't satisfy, visitors may also explore the castle gardens, which hold attractions such as the Wishing Stone and Druids' Altar. Blarney Castle does have an admission fee, but this is sometimes waived if visitors book their visit using Irish tourism websites. The Blarney Castle Hotel is the closest hotel at which to stay, but there are other accommodations in Blarney such as the Blarney Park Hotel. A third option for a room is the Blarney Woolen Mills Hotel, which is attached to a shop for traditional Irish merchandise and which is considered "must see."
