Is southern Ireland called Southern or just Ireland?

There is no country or region called Southern Ireland. The island of Ireland is often divided into two parts: Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, and the Republic of Ireland, which is an independent country. The Republic of Ireland is sometimes referred to as "the South" or "the Republic", but it is not called Southern Ireland.
