When did the Irish come to London?

The Irish have had a presence in London for centuries. In the early modern period, significant Irish communities were present in London, due in part to the flight from Ireland during the Nine Years' War (1594–1603) and the later Cromwellian conquest of Ireland. During the mid-18th century, Irish migration to Britain, particularly London, increased greatly. There were over 20,000 Irish people in London by the 1750s, the overwhelming majority of whom were Roman Catholic migrants from Ireland who were seeking work and escape from the poverty and oppression in their native country. They found employment in a variety of industries, including construction, domestic service, and manufacturing. By the 1840s, the Irish-born population of London had reached almost 125,000, making up over 20% of the city's total population. Irish migration continued throughout the 19th century and into the 20th century.
