Who is Matilde Calderon?

(born July 12, 1948) is a Nicaraguan poet, novelist and essayist residing in the United States.

She is one of the most widely read poets of Nicaragua and has been acclaimed by critics for her literary merits.

A feminist, López has explored social and political themes, as well as female sexuality, often in a context that combines both historical reality and magical realism.

Her novel *The Time of the Hero* received an honorable mention in the Casa de las Américas Prize competition in 1978.

Her book of poetry *Where the air is Clear* won the Casa de las Américas Prize in 1972 and in 2020 the National Prize of Nicaragua in Literature.

She has published 20 books. Her best known volumes of poems are *Where the air is clear*, *Skylight*, *About Us*, *The Hours to Burn*, *Country Song*, *What Remains of the Lightning* and *The Other Place*.

Among her novels are: *Time of the heroes*, *The fish on dry land*, *The bride of America* and *Doña Inés against all hope*.

She has also written books of essays and children's books.
