The population of El Salvador is very racially and ethnically diverse, with a variety of different origins and backgrounds. While the majority of Salvadorans identify as mestizo, meaning of mixed European and Indigenous ancestry, there is also a significant minority of Pipil, an Indigenous group native to the region, as well as smaller communities of European immigrants, descendants of African slaves, and Afro-Caribbean immigrants.
