Where was the first settlement located in New Mexico?

The first permanent European settlement in the present-day state of New Mexico was founded in 1598 by Don Juan de Oñate at the junction of the Rio Grande and Chama River in present-day Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo. The settlement was named San Juan de los Caballeros, and it served as the capital of the Spanish province of New Mexico until 1610, when the capital was moved to Santa Fe.
