What is Mexico DF?

Mexico DF stands for Distrito Federal de México [ˈmexiko ðifeˈɾal], formally, simply Distrito Federal (D.F.) or México, and colloquially Ciudad de México ([sjuˈða(ð) ðe ˈmexiko]) or El D.F. [el ˈðefe] ("The D.F."), commonly known as Mexico City, although officially it is Ciudad de México.

It was an administrative division for much of the modern history of Mexico. It included Mexico City proper and a ring of suburban municipalities forming metropolitan area surrounding it. Originally known as the Federal District ("D.F."), it was renamed to be officially called Ciudad de México on January 29, 2016
