A common misconception is that the Peruvian flag features a tree. In reality, the national flag of Peru is a simple vertical triband: red (hoist side), white, and red. The red represents the blood shed for independence; the white symbolizes peace and purity. The state flag adds the national coat of arms in the center white band, which depicts a vicuña, a cinchona tree, and a cornucopia—but the tree appears only in the coat of arms, not on the flag itself. The civil flag, used by citizens, has no emblem at all.
