Do You Need Permission to Visit Mexico?

No prior "permission" is required for tourist visits, but you must meet entry requirements at the border/port of entry.

Tourist Entry Requirements (U.S. Citizens)

• Valid U.S. passport book (for air travel) OR passport card / enhanced driver's license / Trusted Traveler card (SENTRI, NEXUS, FAST) for land/sea entry
• Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM) – Tourist permit issued on arrival:
  • Air: Included in ticket fee; issued onboard/before landing
  • Land: ~$30 USD (MXN 687) if staying >7 days; free ≤7 days
  • Cruise: Often included in fare
• Proof of return/onward travel (may be requested)
• Proof of sufficient funds (rarely checked, but have card/cash)
• No visa required for tourism ≤180 days

When You Need a Visa / Pre-Authorization

• Stay >180 days → Temporary Resident Visa (apply at Mexican consulate)
• Work, study, journalism, humanitarian, religious activities → Specific visa
• Non-U.S. citizens: Check INM for nationality-specific rules

Vehicle Import (If Driving)

• Free Zone (border to ~20-30 km): No permit needed
• Beyond Free Zone: Temporary Vehicle Import Permit (TIP) required:
  • Obtain at border (Bancomer/Banjercito) or online banjercito.com.mx
  • Deposit ($200–$400 refundable) + fee (~$50)
  • Valid for FMM duration (max 180 days)
• Mexican auto insurance mandatory (U.S. policies invalid)

COVID-19 / Health (Current)

As of 2024: No vaccination/test/quarantine requirements for entry. Health questionnaire discontinued.

Best Practice

• Passport valid 6+ months beyond return
• Make photocopies/digital backups of passport, FMM, insurance
• Register with STEP for embassy alerts
• Check State Dept Mexico Travel Advisory before departure
