Founders of Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Río

Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Río, one of California's historic Spanish missions, was established through the efforts of several key figures. The primary founder was Junípero Serra (1713–1784), a Spanish Franciscan friar who spearheaded the California mission system. He was accompanied by Juan Crespí (1721–1782), another Franciscan friar and explorer who documented the journeys. Military support came from Pedro Fages (1734–1794), a Spanish officer who served as governor of Alta California during two separate terms (1770–1774 and 1782–1791). Together, these three men laid the groundwork for the mission's founding and early operation.
