Spain's Territorial Divisions: Autonomous Communities, Not States

Spain does not use the term "state" for its primary subdivisions. The country is divided into 17 autonomous communities (comunidades autónomas) and 2 autonomous cities (Ciudades Autónomas: Ceuta and Melilla). Each has its own government and statute of autonomy.
