Did the Spaniards Leave New Mexico?

The Spanish did not simply "leave" New Mexico. After Mexico won independence from Spain in 1821, New Mexico became part of Mexico. It remained Mexican territory until the Mexican–American War and the subsequent Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848), after which it became a U.S. territory. New Mexico achieved statehood in 1912.
