Reforms Proposed by José María Morelos in Mexico

Priest-general José María Morelos y Pavón (1765–1815) championed radical reforms during the Mexican War of Independence:

• Abolition of slavery – Immediate freedom for all enslaved people.
• Land redistribution – Return land to indigenous communities dispossessed by Spaniards.
• Public education – Universal, free schooling regardless of class.
• Democratic government – Representative, accountable republic.

His Sentimientos de la Nación (1813) articulated these ideals, inspiring the 1824 Constitution.
