Why is Columbus important to Texas?

Christopher Columbus' voyages to America had little to no direct impact on Texas. Columbus never set foot in Texas, and his explorations primarily took place in the Caribbean and Central America. The colonization and development of Texas primarily occurred much later, involving different European powers and settlers.
