Who helped Argentina Chile and Peru win independence?

José de San Martín was a military leader and revolutionary who played a key role in the independence of Argentina, Chile, and Peru from Spanish rule. He is considered one of the most important figures in the history of South American independence.

San Martín was born in Yapeyú, Argentina, in 1778. He joined the Spanish army at the age of 12 and fought in the wars against the French in Europe. After the defeat of the Spanish in the Peninsular War, San Martín returned to Argentina in 1812 and joined the independence movement.

In 1816, San Martín led the Army of the Andes across the Andes Mountains and into Chile. He defeated the Spanish forces at the Battle of Chacabuco and liberated Chile. In 1821, he led the Peruvian Expedition and liberated Peru from Spanish rule.

San Martín retired from military life in 1822 and went into exile in Europe. He died in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, in 1850.
