Why did the Spanish leave Tenochtitlan in 1540?

The Spanish did not leave Tenochtitlan in 1540. In 1519, Hernán Cortés and his conquistadors arrived in Tenochtitlan and conquered the Aztec Empire. The Spanish then established Mexico City on the ruins of Tenochtitlan.
