Guatemala's Water Borders: Pacific Ocean & Caribbean Sea (Gulf of Mexico)

Guatemala has two coastlines on two different ocean basins:

  • South: Pacific Ocean — ~250 km (155 mi) of volcanic black-sand beaches.
  • Northeast: Caribbean Sea (part of Gulf of Mexico basin) — ~150 km (93 mi) on Gulf of Honduras / Amatique Bay.

Key Coastal Features

Strategic Significance

  • Puerto Quetzal (Pacific): Main commercial port — containers, bulk, cruise.
  • Santo Tomás de Castilla (Caribbean): Bulk, ro-ro, cruise — Atlantic access.
  • No canal — but inter-oceanic corridor proposals (rail/dry canal) periodically resurface.

Marine Biodiversity

  • Pacific: Humpback whales (Dec–Mar), olive ridley turtles, pelagic fish.
  • Caribbean: Mesoamerican Barrier Reef (northern end), manatees, coral, lionfish (invasive).

Note: Some sources say "Gulf of Mexico" for Caribbean coast — technically, Gulf of Honduras connects to Caribbean, which connects to Gulf of Mexico via Yucatán Channel. Caribbean Sea is the precise hydrographic label.
