Mexico City may be the best city to visit in Mexico. As the capital, Mexico City, or “D.F.,” as the locals call it, is a hub of urban excitement. With booming art and music culture, and a wild nightlife of bars and clubs, Mexico City has a unique balance of activities for travelers. Whether you’re interested in hearing traditional Mexican music or the local indie bands, spend some time in the neighborhoods of La Zona Roja or San Angel. Polanco and Condesa are also great barrios to looking for local restaurants, raucous bars and rowdy dance clubs. During the day, explore the numerous museums, such as the Museum of Frida Kahlo or the National Anthropological Museum.
If your idea of vacation is getting away from the city, traffic and noise, head to the coast. Acapulco is renowned for its beaches and nightlife for a reason. If you’re looking for a bit of luxury and class, check into any of Acapulco’s beachside resorts, such as Las Brisas or the Bayan Tree, and get pampered. After a day of lounging on the beach, swing through Costa Aleman or Carretera Escenica, where the dance clubs will be pumping the volume up on hard rock, electronica and trance for their hippest crowds.
Like Acapulco, Mazatlan on the Pacific Coast is another vacation hot spot. For some outdoor activity and thrills, take the short trip out to Deer Island, where you’ll find snorkeling, hiking, kayaking and, of course, swimming in the bay of Mazatlan. Stone Island also offers other popular sports activities, such as surfing, jet skiing and horseback riding on its white-sand shores. If you’re a fan of tequila, Mexico’s national liquor, don’t skip the Mazatlan Tequila tour, on which you’ll visit La Vinata, one of the oldest tequila distilleries in the country.
Situated on the Yucatan Peninsula, jutting out into the Caribbean Sea, Cancun is the classic vacation destination in Mexico. It has all the nightlife and the gorgeous beaches that Mexico is known for. What makes Cancun special are the Mayan ruins of Chichen-Itza and Tulum, each just a short bus ride away. Throw yourself into the rich history of the Mayas and take a tour of the magnificent ruins of the Maya-Toltec civilization. Cancun is also an excellent site for scuba diving. Certified scuba divers can explore the wondrous Great Mesoamerican Reef, just off the coast of Cancun. If you’re not a professional scuba diver, there are plenty of diving schools with instructors, guides and classes.
