What happened after Father Miguel Hidalgo died?
After Father Miguel Hidalgo died, leadership of the Mexican independence movement fell to another priest, José María Morelos. Morelos continued Hidalgo's campaign, and eventually managed to capture several major cities, including Cuautla and Chilpancingo. However, he was eventually defeated by royalist forces and executed in 1815.
After Morelos' death, the independence movement was further weakened by internal divisions and the capture of its remaining leaders. However, it was ultimately successful in 1821 when the royalist government collapsed and Mexico gained its independence.
