How did Eddy County New Mexico get its name?
The county was created on February 25, 1887, to include the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation, which was later removed from the county's jurisdiction. The county is named after Charles Eddy, a prominent frontier lawyer and politician who served as a brigadier general in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. He later became a prominent attorney and politician in New Mexico, and served as Chief Justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court from 1871 to 1881.
