How long do Mexican jumping beans last?

Mexican jumping beans don't actually jump. They move due to the larva of a small moth (Laspeyresia saltitans) wriggling around inside the seed of various types of small bean pods to seek relief from heat caused by exposure to sunlight. If not overheated by extreme temperatures or dried out too soon, many will last for several winters before the adults exit and lay eggs
