Why was Stephen f Austin arrested in Saltillo Mexico?
Stephen F. Austin was arrested in Saltillo, Mexico in 1834 under the orders of Antonio López de Santa Anna. The Texas Revolution had begun the previous year, and Austin was in Saltillo to request more autonomy for Texas from the Mexican government. Santa Anna was suspicious of Austin and his motives, and he believed that Austin was planning to secede from Mexico. He ordered Austin's arrest and had him imprisoned in Mexico City. Austin was released in 1835, and he returned to Texas to lead the revolution.
