Determine your travel destination and any stops you would like to make along the way. Find out how many miles it is from home to your destination using an online map calculator, such as Trip Calculator (see Resources).
Estimate your gas expenses by entering how many miles per gallon your car uses along with the approximate cost of gas per gallon for your travel area. Input your approximate travel speed in the trip calculator, such as 65 miles per hour for highway travel. Record your estimated travel time.
Make hotel or camping reservations for your destination, if necessary, as well as for scheduled overnight stops.
Service your vehicle and ask a mechanic to check your overall vehicle condition. Explain that you are preparing for a road trip. Check the air compression in your tires. Pack an emergency road kit and a first aid kit in your car. Put a road map and an optional electronic navigation system in your car.
Make a list of emergency phone numbers to keep in your car. Include the numbers of your hotel or campground, your doctor and the U.S. Embassy if you are leaving the country.
Pack snacks and plenty of water in your car. Include entertainment for long drives, such as books on tape, music and car games for the family.
