Create your moving budget two months prior to your move. Gather estimates from moving companies and rental moving trucks. Make a folder to hold your moving receipts. Call the Chamber of Commerce in your new town and request the new resident packet. If you know the layout of your new home, begin planning where your furniture will go. Compile medical, dental and financial records and call your insurance company to discuss necessary changes. Transfer or cancel local gym and organization memberships.
About five or six weeks before your move, start cleaning out your house, setting aside items to sell or donating things you no longer need. Use up things that you won't be moving, like frozen food and aerosol cleaners. Make a list of everyone you'll need to notify of your new address. Start collecting boxes and packing supplies and pack things you don't use often. Get copies of school transcripts and contact the new school where your children will be new students.
Make your moving truck reservation one month prior to moving, and file a change of address with the U.S. Postal Service. Schedule the disconnection of your utilities and the connection of those in your new home. Advertise and hold your yard sale. Return library books and other borrowed items and pick up dry cleaning. Discard all flammable and corrosive items you may have, as they cannot be moved.
Two weeks before your move, confirm all travel arrangements. Go to the bank to close or transfer your accounts and withdraw cash for immediate expenses. Notify all creditors of your move. Try to use up the food in the refrigerator, and plan meals around using the appliances that remain unpacked.
Notify friends and family of your move and give them new information. Finish packing, leave valuables and your suitcase separate. Clean and defrost the refrigerator and fill all prescriptions. Arrange for help with your children on your moving day.
On moving day load your moving truck, or direct movers through the house. Check all rooms to confirm that everything is loaded. Confirm that the truck driver has the new address. Leave a note with a forwarding address so that new residents can forward any of your mail that might arrive.
At your new location, get a new driver's license and register your vehicle. Keep all moving receipts in a folder for tax purposes.
