Information on Moving to Another State

Uprooting home and family is not easy, whether it is to a nearby neighborhood or another state. Job opportunities and transitions such as a marriage or a divorce are often behind the decision, compounding the sense of displacement. Any type move is usually stressful, and a state-to-state move can be even more complicated unless you prepare properly.
  1. Research and Visit

    • Research information online for issues such as job possibilities, cost of living and schools in the state. Do not move to a new state without visiting it first. While you may imagine what the state is like from online reading, you must visit to get a true feel for the area. It would be best to visit for at least a week or even two weeks and rent a home before you move permanently.

    Packing

    • Take advantage of the move to sort through all items. Donate or sell what you no longer use or need. Clearly label boxes. Pack boxes carefully and be sure to reinforce boxes with packing tape. Packing should start weeks in advance of the move. If the move is to a smaller or larger space, plan the packing accordingly. Ask family members or friends for help.

    Change of Address

    • The U.S. Postal Service offers an online change of address form. Be sure to complete this task 10 days to two weeks before your move. Inform local services such as the electric company about the move. Call or contact online companies that must be informed immediately about the change of address, such as a monthly prescription program.

    The Move

    • Hire a reputable moving company. If a moving company is too expensive, prepare for the move yourself. Get a tune-up for your car and have at least one credit card available for any emergencies during the trip. If you have pets, check with your veterinarian about how to safely transport them. Clearly map out the trip and plan for rest stops along the way.

    Moving Kit

    • Prepare a moving kit containing essential items that can be found easily upon arrival, such as a toothbrush, medication and a change of clothes. Cooking a meal probably won't happen the first day or two of the arrival in the new location, so have cash or a credit card available for eating out or ordering in.
