Prepare to mail your car tags to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission at: P.O. Box 129 Trenton, New Jersey 08666-0129, after you register your vehicle in another state. Include a stamped, self-addressed envelope in the package for a receipt from the motor vehicle office. According to New Jersey Department of Motor Vehicles, if you still owe insurance surcharges in New Jersey, you will be charged penalties and your driver's license will be suspended. This can keep you from obtaining a new license in your new state.
Contact your realtor. Local newspapers in New Jersey list all real estate transactions that include the seller and buyer's names, address of the property, and amount of the sale. If you do not want the sale listed, notify your real estate agent before settlement.
Request any school records of your household members. For public school, do this through the district superintendent's office. In some cases, it is required that the request be issued by the new school administration. If transferring from one college to another, official transcripts will be sent directly to the school.
Send all physicians a request in writing for medical files of your household members. Include a list of: physician's notes, nurse's notes, blood tests and treatments and all diagnostic test results. Explain that you are moving and will submit the records to the new physician. Physicians and hospitals are required to fill your request but can charge for the copies. Physicians can charge $1 per page up to $100 for the total file, whichever is less. Hospitals can charge $1 per page up to 100 pages and 25 cents per copy thereafter up to a total charge of $200.
Carry your weapons permit. Transporting a firearm in New Jersey as a resident requires a license. The weapon must be unloaded and in the trunk of the car or in a closed carrying case. The weapon cannot be easily accessible to the driver or passenger of the car. The ammunition cannot be accessible from the passenger area of the automobile.
Make a checklist of the other usual things to do, like acquiring packing material, arranging for a moving company and notifying the utility company. Send out notices to family, friends, creditors and magazine companies stating your new address and phone number if available.
Pack up your belongings and move to your new home.
