Make a checklist of things to do before, during and after the move, and cross those things off the list when they are completed.
Choose several possible areas to move to and then visit those areas within the city. You will want to keep an open mind of the area you want to live in for several reasons: the price, location to and from work or school, and neighborhood. Choosing several areas to look into in any given city will give you flexibility to find the place that is ideal for you.
Sign a lease or purchase your home prior to your move. You will want to be sure that you have housing available to you prior to your move date so that you will have a secure location to move into. If you are purchasing your home, you will want to be sure that the close date is several days to weeks before your move.
Hire a moving company. Whether you hire a moving company or rent a moving van, a reservation should be made as far in advance as possible. Rental companies often have special deals for those who book early or make a reservation online. According to the Budget Truck Rental company website, availability for rentals is highest from early to mid-month.
Make travel arrangements. Travel arrangements, whether you are driving or flying to your new state need to be made a few weeks in advance. If you are flying, tickets need to be booked, and if you are driving, car repairs and service should be done in advance. Additionally, pet travel needs to be taken care of if the family pets are coming along on the move.
Change your contact information. A change of address form through the post office will help you to receive mail in your new location. Additionally, you should contact creditors, your bank, local government agencies, insurance agency, friends, family and colleagues to update them with your new address. Your pharmacy should also be alerted ahead of time so that prescriptions can be sent to the new pharmacy before you run out of your current dose.
Schedule turn on and turn off dates with utility companies. You will need to schedule a date for electricity, gas and other utilities to be turned off in your old home while a "turn on" date should be scheduled for each at your new home.
When you pack, make sure that boxes are clearly labeled so that you can unpack necessities first when you arrive at your new home.
Keep medication and important documents or valuables with you rather than in a moving van when you move.
