The Hawaiian islands were initially inhabited by native Hawaiians until 1778 when Captain James Cook arrived. In 1898, the Republic of Hawaii was annexed by the United States and became a territory in 1900. Hawaii achieved statehood on August 21, 1959, becoming the 50th state of the United States.
