Fun Stuff to Do in North East, Maryland

As its name implies, North East is a small town in the northeastern corner of Maryland and located on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Settled before the 18th century, North East offers historic sites for tourists to visit. Also, North East is within 30 minutes of outdoor recreation and boating opportunities throughout Cecil County. North East is accessible from Interstate 95, which is less than 10 minutes north of the city.
  1. Boating

    • North East is located at the northern tip of the Chesapeake Bay, making boating opportunities available in this city. The largest marina in North East is McDaniel Yacht Basin (mcdanielyacht.com), which has over 200 boat slips. Approximately 400 boat storage units are at McDaniel. The Locust Point Marina (locustpointmarina.com) and Taylor's Marina (46 River Road; Elkton, MD 2192; 410-392-4994) are in Elkton, less than 30 minutes from North East. Both marinas are on the shores of the Elk River, which offers immediate passage into the Chesapeake Bay; the Bay is a 10 to 15 minute boat ride from the marinas. Locust Point has 92 boating slips, while 72 slips are at Taylor's Marina.

    Historic Landmarks

    • Two historic landmarks are in North East: Turkey Point Light Station and Gilpin's Falls Covered Bridge. The construction for Turkey Point Light Station was complete in 1833, making it one of the oldest lighthouses on the Chesapeake Bay. Turkey Point Light Station is one a four-acre land plot and accessible via a 1.6-mile hiking trail in the adjacent Elk Neck State Park. Guests may ascend the 35-foot lighthouse. Developed in 1860, the Gilpin's Falls Covered Bridge is the longest surviving covered bridge in Maryland. The bridge is 119 feet long. Although it once accommodated horse and automobile travel, only pedestrians are currently allowed to walk on the bridge.

    Outdoor Recreation

    • One of the largest recreation areas in northeastern Maryland, Elk Neck State Forest, is within 10 minutes of North East. Elk Neck State Forest has 3,300 acres and provides trails for hiking, horseback riding and bicycling. The park's longest trail system, the Elk Neck Trail System, offers over 14 miles of paths for hiking. The citizens of North East also have access to the park's shooting ranges for firearms and archery. Elk Neck State Forest also hosts birdwatching excursions by the Cecil County Bird Club. Located off the Main Road Trail, the Pete Bond Scenic Overlook offers picturesque views of the Chesapeake Bay.

    Golfing

    • The only golf course in North East is the Chesapeake Bay Golf Club, or CBGC, (chesapeakegolf.com), located right off Turkey Point Road. CBGC provides two 18-hole courses, the North East and Rising Sun. The courses are open to the public. Both courses have their own clubhouses. The North East and Rising Sun's clubhouses have pro shops, lockers and on-site restaurants. Qualified Professional Golf Association members are available to mentor aspiring golfers through the CBGC Golf Academy.
